Blink

Blink is a non-destructive script for Aseprite that adds a cinematic eye-opening glow effect to your animation. Designed to work alongside a first-person eyelid animation, it simulates the blurry, hazy vision of a character waking up or struggling to focus.

How it works

The script reads your active layer and automatically generates a Blink group containing two layers: Blink Blur, a softened copy of your sprite across all frames, and Blink Glow, a blurred overlay on Screen blend mode applied only to the first frames of the animation — where the eyes are barely open and the light bleeds most. The blur kernel intensity is highest at the start and gradually decreases as the animation progresses, mimicking the natural transition from unfocused to clear vision. At the end of the process, you will need to drag the layer containing the blinking animation to the first position for it to work correctly. 

What's included

The download includes the Blink script, Blink v2, and a ready-to-use 300×300 pixel first-person eyelid animation. Simply place your background or scene on a lower layer, run the script on the eyelid layer, and the waking effect is ready. The difference between the script versions is that the first one is hardcoded (ready to use with the eyelid animation), and v2 can be customized to your liking with different intensities and frame durations.

Use cases

Cutscene intros, game over / respawn screens, dream sequences, or any moment where a character regains consciousness.

The blinking animation is just a guide. You can customize it to your liking, although the tempo is measured to match the effects caused by the script in the original drawing. If you want a different type of blinking, you will have to use version v2 and try different values.
